This house, one of a number of Colonial- and Federal-era homes in Litchfield, was built for Alexander Catlin, a founder of the Litchfield China Trading Company. It is on a street where two other notable structures once stood: the Litchfield Female Academy, a private girls’ school founded in 1792, and the childhood home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, dismantled more than 20 ago and put into storage.

The property is a five-minute drive from the Litchfield Historical Society, at the center of town. Driving to Hartford, Conn., takes about an hour, as does driving to New Haven. New York City is about two and a half hours away.

Indoors: The house is set back from the street, behind a lawn and a semicircular driveway. The front door opens into a foyer with black-and-white tile floors, a staircase to the second floor and white wainscoting topped by wallpaper depicting a colorful pastoral scene.

To the right is a wood-paneled study with a fireplace. Across the foyer is a living room with hardwood floors and another fireplace. Behind this space is a formal dining room with a built-in cabinet in one corner.

At the back of the house is an updated kitchen with a stainless steel Viking range, a dedicated wine refrigerator, a built-in desk and French doors that open to the backyard and pool area. Off the kitchen is a family room with wide-plank floors and more doors to the pool area. A powder room and a laundry room are also in this part of the house.

All four bedrooms are upstairs. The primary suite, off the landing at the top of the stairs, includes a spacious closet with built-in storage and a bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower. The bedroom across the hall has built-in bookshelves and an attached bathroom with a walk-in shower. Two more en suite bedrooms are also on this floor, one with a claw-foot tub in the bathroom.

Outdoor space: The lawn in the backyard frames a fenced-in swimming pool with room for lounge chairs around it. The property also includes a stone patio on the side. The detached garage has one parking spot; there is room for another car under the carport.

This house is in the Ansley Park neighborhood, near Piedmont Park, a green space of more than 200 acres. It is a five-minute walk from the Atlanta Botanical Garden, which is inside Piedmont Park and includes a rose garden, a traditional Japanese garden and an indoor space with tropical and desert plants. Bobby Jones Golf Course, a municipal course adjacent to biking and walking trails, is about 10 minutes away by car.

Driving to the city’s bustling Midtown, a popular dining and shopping destination, takes about five minutes. Downtown is about 15 minutes away, as is Emory University. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is about a half-hour drive, depending on traffic.

Indoors: From the street, a brick path and steps lead up to a wide covered porch overlooking the lush front yard, which is landscaped with low trees and flowering plants.

The front door opens into a living room with hardwood floors, a fireplace and street-facing windows with original decorative detailing. A doorway connects this space to an adjoining living area with a period-appropriate pendant light.

Beyond is a dining room with glass doors that open to the conservatory running alongside the house. A door in the dining room leads to the kitchen, which has a center island and stainless steel appliances. Around the corner is a family room with a fireplace and access to the rear courtyard. Nearby is a powder room with gold wallpaper.

There are two bedrooms on this level, behind the kitchen. Each is big enough to hold a queen-size bed, and both have en suite bathrooms.

A staircase in the kitchen leads to the second floor, where there are two more bedrooms. The primary bedroom has high ceilings, a fireplace with an ornate mantel and an en suite bathroom with a tub under a stained-glass window and a separate shower. The smaller bedroom next door is currently used as a home office.

Another full bathroom is on the lowest level of the house, along with an open space that has its own exterior entrance and could be used as a den or an additional bedroom.

Outdoor space: Behind the house is a walled patio landscaped with mature trees and plants. It includes a koi pond, a built-in barbecue and space for outdoor dining.

This home is in the University District, a neighborhood named for its proximity to the University of Montana. It is about half a mile from the campus and less than five minutes from the university library and the George and Jane Dennison Theatre, an Art Deco venue where cultural events and musical performances are held. The University of Montana’s soccer field and golf course are less than a mile away, as are the trailheads to hiking routes winding up Mount Sentinel.

The property is about a mile from shopping, businesses and public parks along the Clark Fork River. Missoula Montana Airport is about 20 minutes away. Driving west to Spokane, Wash., takes about three hours.

Indoors: A paved path cuts through the front lawn, leading to a small courtyard and the front door, at the center of the classic Tudor Revival-style facade.

The foyer has hardwood floors and access to a powder room. The hardwood flooring continues through an arched doorway into a bright living room with a decorative fireplace, windows facing the front and side yards, and walls finished with clay. Another arched doorway leads from the living room into a windowed dining area with built-in bench seating and a modern chandelier.

Off the dining room is an updated kitchen with new appliances, including a Thermador range, and a window overlooking the rear patio.

Two bedrooms are on this level, off a corridor extending from the dining room. One has a bay window overlooking the front yard; the other has a built-in bench and a brass candle-style chandelier. They share a bathroom with a sleek porcelain pedestal sink and a glass-walled shower.

Two more bedrooms are downstairs, reached by a staircase in the kitchen. The smaller one is at the bottom of the stairs. The larger, used by the sellers as the primary bedroom, is at the end of a short hallway. It has a white-painted brick fireplace and an en suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower and a soaking tub next to French doors that open to a private patio.

Outdoor space: The patio off the kitchen is paved with large stones and has a smaller circle of stones at the center, to hold a dining table and chairs. The brick patio off the primary suite is big enough to hold a pair of chairs. The attached garage has one parking space.
